I am happy to start off the first post in our series of Geodomain Investment and Development with an account of Missouri.me by Bruce Marler of Localtek and BruceMarler.com.
Bruce has been kind enough to share his perspective and insight on the strategies he believes have played a key role in making Missouri.me a successful state-branded property by catering to the needs of its community first. His words:
“As someone who had traveled frequently I had been noticing a trend—a gap in the resources that rural and medium communities had (compared to larger metropolitan areas). Coincidently my business partner (a long time rural small business owner) and I had frequently talked about the lack of online marketing and local online advertising opportunities for small businesses in rural regions. I had recently acquired Missouri.me and after some initial brainstorming and a bit of an epiphany, we determined that we could use the Missouri.me name to develop a network of local community portals throughout the state and offer something of value to both community residents and small businesses.
First we spent time talking to residents and business owners; then we sat down with government officials in a few areas to discuss what they would find of value in a site devoted to their community. This, to me, was one of our smarter moves—doing research to determine what the customers would want rather than building portals based on what we wanted. This brought us quick success.
An example of a community portal can be found at Linn.Missouri.me. Linn is a site where the local newspaper simply had not caught up with the times and had been the only place local residents had available for news and information. Creating a combination website for the local county government and Missouri.me has given them something they never really had before—an online presence.
We continue to have great success and have enjoyed a growing list of referral customers. We receive calls constantly from people informing us that customer X said they are having great success with Missouri.me and Localtek. To me, that is the best sign of success—when your customers start talking about their growth and happiness with your product.”
Thanks to Bruce Marler for sharing his expertise with us and be sure to read Part II in our series on Geodomain Investment and Development, Acapulco.com.
